The pianist in Washington Square Park

There's a guy in Washington Square Park who plays a piano, an actual piano, there by the fountain. He wears a kind of porkpie hat and a black suit jacket. Dapper and threadbare. The weather's gone cool now, and so couples sit close together on the benches and listen to him play. (In the summer, people splashed in the fountain and flounced by, interested in his music only briefly. They were alight with the summer night.) Tonight I saw a guy with a stroller listening, rocking the carriage when the baby cried. The guy was not ready to leave and hoped the baby would settle soon.

I have no pictures of this pianist. But I do have one of a cellist who played under the arch there in the park a few weeks ago…

And I have a nice photo of J enjoying him…
