January 2012

• My second "On the Web" column for Snapshots, Photograph magazine's blog, has been posted: http://photographmag.com/snapshots/2012/01/10/on-the-web-is-it-time-for-a-slow-photography-movement

• I'm working with Eyeist again, this time on text for the homepage. The project involves not just writing copy that matches the tone and conveys the necessary information but also determing the logic of the text elements—positioning, hierarchy, functionality. In addition to writing copy, I created a mockup of how it might be laid out. With a project like this, I find it's often better to show rather than explain how I propose something might work.

• Just completed another Canon advertorial for PDN. The photographer, Tyler Stableford, was a dream to work with. So smart and professional.

December 2011

• I'm now writing a column for Photograph magazine's blog, Snapshots, that centers on the online photo world—trends at various photo blogs, stories from the fine-art world, subjects of debate, etc. The first one, "It Feels Like the First Time," was posted on December 6: http://photographmag.com/snapshots/2011/12/06/on-the-web-it-feels-like-the-first-time.

• The spring 2012 issue of Emerging Photographer is under way. I've spent the past few weeks assigning and editing the issue, whose theme is editorial photography. Lots of good writing and strong photography by some major shooters. I'm really pleased with how the issue is turning out.

• Advertising and promotion are changing in visually exciting ways, as evidenced by the projects produced by a new client of mine, Klip Collective, which is based in Philadelphia. I wrote some case studies for them about several of the 3D-video installations they recently dreamed up for major clients. Klip is a smallish company that pulls off some very big spectacles. I'm excited to be working with them.

November 2011

• I’ve begun working on a copywriting project for a mobile app produced by A&E’s History brand. My first mobile-app project. Character counts loom large!

• PDN’s Weddings Issue (December 2011) is published. It contains short profiles I wrote on photographers Austin Gros, Corbin Gurkin, and KT Merry, as well as a custom editorial piece on Bill Frakes for the magazine’s Video Guide.

“CC52: The First Six Months” goes live on issuu.com. I conceived and designed the portfolio, which features selected images from award-winning photographer Craig Cutler’s wonderful CC52 project, for which he is creating new personal work every week for a year. • I worked with photographers Doug Menuez and Gabriela Herman on two photo-tips slideshows for LIFE.com. Gabi’s is called “How to Take Creative Self-Portraits,” and it really lives up to its name. I had met her at a portfolio review in February and invited her to contribute. We worked together on text and selects. October 2011

Allegra Wilde hired me to write copy for her exciting new project, Eyeist (eyeist.com). It’s an online portfolio-review service that’s launching in January 2012. Her partners in Eyeist are Jesse Diamond, Micah Diamond, and Doug Dawirs.

• Over the past year, I’ve worked on various photo-related copywriting projects for the design and branding agency Carbone Smolan. This month, they hired me to write copy for a brochure for a major camera manufacturer.

• The fall 2011 issue of Emerging Photographer is published. It’s our documentary issue and includes a feature on National Geographic photographer Michael Yamashita; a think piece by Miriam S. Grotte, who once worked as an assistant to Susan Meiselas; insights from Patrick Witty, international picture editor at TIME; and a profile of LaToya Ruby Frazier, among other stories. I’ll post the link as soon as PDN uploads the magazine to issuu.com.

• I worked with LIFE.com on a pair of slideshows centering on photo appreciation, titled “What Makes Photos Great?” For the slideshow “Looking for Heroes,” I enlisted David Schonauer, former editor in chief of American Photo. His writing about portrayals of heroes of all stripes is intelligent and illuminating. Link: http://www.life.com/gallery/64811/life-looking-for-heroes#index/0 For "Closed Encounters: ‘The Unseen Eye,’” I asked collector W.M. Hunt to comment on selections from his beguiling new book, The Unseen Eye: Photographs From the Unconscious. Link: http://www.life.com/gallery/66061/closed-encounters-the-unseen-eye#index/0
