JIM GOLDBERG
Jim Goldberg on letting intuition guide his collage work, from a video shot last year by Magnum Photos in his California studio. (Head to Vimeo to watch the whole film.)
Pages from “Raised by Wolves.” The book, published in 1995, is a vivid, visceral portrait of California street kids.
Miscellaneous Polaroids that Jim Goldberg made for “Open See.” From Magnum: “Through portraits, landscapes, and collaborative works, Jim Goldberg’s expansive ‘Open See’ follows refugee and immigrant populations traveling from war-torn, economically devastated, and often AIDS-ravaged countries, to make new homes in Europe. The photographer spent four years documenting the stories of refugees in over 18 countries, from Russia and the Middle East to Asia and Africa. To convey a “more in-depth understanding” of the people he was working with, he tapped into a practice he had developed while in graduate school: hand finishing photographs, and including handwriting to tell the stories of his subjects, making each a unique object encapsulating a story.”

A look at Coming and Going. From Mack Books: “Coming and Going is Jim Goldberg’s unique work of autobiography. Since 1999, Goldberg has been photographing his daily life through all its vicissitudes and returning to his studio to re-imagine and investigate these images through a practice of collage, annotation, montage, and reconstruction for which he has become renowned. This book charts a course through the grief following the death of one’s parents, the life-altering birth of a child, the heartbreak of divorce, and the rediscovery of love.”
